Urban Acupuncture: A Methodology for the Sustainable Rehabilitation of "Society Buildings" in Vancouver's Chinatown into Contemporary Housing
This study proposes an economically, environmentally and culturally sustainable approach to the rehabilitation of four Chinatown "society buildings" — buildings that were built by benevolent societies and family clan associations which offered housing and assistance to community members. These buildings were used as trial models for establishing a methodology to protect and preserve heritage buildings while accommodating adaptations for future habitation. The resulting methodology is called "Urban Acupuncture".
