Wood Buffalo Affordable Housing Project Charrette
65361

From 1996 to 2006, the population of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, Alberta, rose 71 per cent. This phenomenal growth was fuelled by the rapid expansion of the high paying petroleum industry, and it resulted in both a dramatic increase in the average price of housing and a widespread housing shortage. The wage boom, however, did not apply to all sectors and thus many were unable to afford what little housing was available. To address these problems, the Wood Buffalo Housing and Development Corporation (WBHDC), in conjunction with CMHC, held a design charrette to establish the development principles for a 20-acre affordable housing project in Fort McMurray.
