2006 Census Housing Series: Issue 1 — Demographics and Housing Construction
This document examines the relationship between growth in household formation (number of households) and housing construction in Canada from 1971 to 2001. As the number of households increases, housing stock tends to expand accordingly. Research found, however, that in the interval between the 2001 and 2006 Census, the number of new homes constructed in Canada exceeded the net change in the number of households, although the rates of household formation varied significantly across urban housing markets.
