Code Requirements and Costs of Incorporating Accessory Apartments in Houses
This study compared code requirements regulating accessory apartments — also known as in-law suites or secondary suites — in effect in 2005 in different Canadian provinces, territories and municipalities. It estimated the costs attributed to code requirements in two different situations: the first involving construction of a new house containing a basement accessory apartment, and the second involving the addition of an accessory apartment in the basement of an existing house, and found that code requirements differed substantially across the country.
