Investigation of a Ground-Source Heat Pump Retrofit to an Electrically Heated Multi-Family Building
Electric baseboard heaters are used in 53-81% of the existing stock of MURBs, but are now undesirable for many reasons. This study examined the practicalities of replacing them with tangential fan coils, with the heat source being a water-to-water ground-source heat pump system. The study showed that in the hypothetical case of a 642 unit MURB, the payback was some 20 years. While such retrofit is possible it is not economically viable based on space heating energy savings alone, but there are design options that could be pursued to make it better meet the needs of MURBs.
