House Dust: A Useful Tool to Assess Microbial Contamination in Homes
The family home can become a source of microbial contamination, where molds and bacteria thrive, due to inadequate ventilation or high moisture levels. This study compared the mold and bacteria content in ordinary house dust from healthy homes to those with histories of water damage. Results showed the dust from healthy homes to have up to seven times less mold than that from water damaged homes. Bacterial counts were more than twice as high in the damaged homes, although the sample size was too small for statistical validity. This study confirms the reliability of house dust sampling as a complementary diagnosis tool for the assessment of indoor microbial contamination.
