The indoor environment in houses can have a profound effect on the occupants' health, and research has shown that the transfer of automotive pollutants from attached garages can compromise indoor air quality. This research examined the extent to which this transfer occurs, and suggested remedial action. Garage-to-house air leakage was found to be significant, especially in houses where the mechanical room (with furnace) is accessed through the garage. About 10% of the houses in the study had leakage levels that could cause significant indoor air quality problems. Better air sealing between the garage and house is recommended, as well as the installation of a garage exhaust fan.
