Residential Combustion Spillage Monitoring
This research describes a detailed study of combustion spillage in 16 houses that had experienced incidents of spillage in an earlier, but less detailed study. Comprehensive monitoring of factors such as fireplace usage, status of windows and doors, exhaust fan operation, and air sampling in selected areas of the houses was carried out. Surprisingly, remarkably few houses actually had significant spillage events. For the housing industry, the study indicates that poor chimney performance is the most likely contributing factor to combustion spillage.
