Intergenerational Homesharing and Secondary Suites in Québec Suburbs
63573
This research examined the addition of secondary suites to single-family houses for intergenerational home-sharing. A wide variety of types of homes, financial arrangements, and motivations for sharing was found in the 16 houses studied in Québec City suburbs. The benefits were numerous, to all parties, with security being the most mentioned. Drawbacks relate to such things as increased demand for services, additional traffic, and daily living issues such as loss of privacy. Overall, the concept appears to be a positive experience, but success is dependent on a clear understanding of the mutual roles of each generation sharing the home.
